While learning the techniques and procedures of setting up and conducting water pollution investigations, your students test and gather data about streams, rivers, and lakes. After finding the pollution and its source, they alert the proper authorities and recommend solutions.Exercises reasoning and thinking skills.

Introduction

Cleanwater Detectives is a discovery-learning simulation that addresses the issue of water pollution. The program capitalizes on the natural curiosity of students and encourages them to learn scientific content and develop scientific processes.

The simulation begins by announcing a problem (e.g., The beach in Lakeville is closed due to smelly water and weeds along the shore”). Students may choose from three levels of difficulty.

At the Assistant (beginner) level, students identify the source of pollution in a body of water (e.g., Hilltop Farms). At the Detective level, students also identify the cause of the pollution (e.g., fertilizer runoff), and at the Enforcer level, students also recommend a corrective action (e.g., clean up the damage).
