This discovery-learning simulation is an excellent introduction to the science inquiry process. Kids select plants and regulate up to three variables that affect growth. They then collect and analyze the information to identify the growth characteristics of their plants.Features multiple difficulty levels.Contains student records and a variety of management options.

Introduction

In Woolly’s Garden, children assume the role of scientists as they set out to discover how each of four variables (type of plant, temperature, length of day, and amount of water) influence the growth and yield of plants. The program enables children to explore the relationships between the four variables and plant growth and yield in an undirected, open-ended environment.

Title: Woolly’s Garden
Subject: Life science
Topic: Growing plants
Grade Range: K – Grade 2
Program Type: Discovery-learning simulation
Required Hardware: Apple II series computer with 128K; color monitor is recommended; printer is optional
Classroom Use: Individual students or small groups

Learning Objectives:

  • to observe, hypothesize, form and test models, and design experiments
  • to collect, organize, and interpret data in order to solve a problem
  • to identify four influences of plant growth and yield
  • to predict the relationship between the four variables (type of plant, temperature, length of day, and amount of water) on the growth of a plant and its yield
