Introduction

Wonderland Puzzles provides students with an engaging activity that will help them to develop their logical reasoning skills. Students will be challenged as they play one strategy game and four logic games, which can be played together in the program Wonderland or played separately by choosing each from the Game menu.

Wonderland Puzzles is based on the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Carroll was a mathematician with a particular interest in logic and puzzles, and he published several books on these topics. He was very fond of children and often challenged them with puzzles. Given Carroll’s background, it seems appropriate that his book should be the basis for a collection of mathematical logic games.

The games in Wonderland Puzzles are based on scenes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, providing a connection with literature that can be used to integrate mathematics with the language arts. Students who are curious about the scenes depicted and the details present in the game should be encouraged to read the book, which will shed light on the items and characters they encounter while they play. Since the reading level of the book is rather advanced (seventh- to eighth-grade level), it would be ideal if a teacher could read the book aloud to students. If this is not possible, simplified versions of the book and videotaped movies based on it are also available.
