| Using the 1860 construction of the first transcontinental railroad as its theme, the Golden Spike provides a simulation in which teams of students act as directors of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads to recreate construction from Sacramento and Omaha. The program develops skills in map reading and research, creates an awareness of the complexities involved in designing and executing a mammoth construction project, and improves proficiency in problem solving. Students use information from the program to make decisions as they build their own railroads, either using the historical routes or “scouting” for passable terrain for a route of their own choosing. The program is useful as a stand-alone unit or as a supplement to curriculum on westward expansion. | ||
